Grow Your Own: Backyard & Community Gardening

What?

Do you want to grow your own fresh, healthy, organic produce? Have you always dreamed  of picking a fresh tomato or cucumber right off the vine and enjoying it where you stood in your own vegetable garden? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, then you’ve found the right place!

The Grow Own Program seeks to improve community food resiliency and provides participants with the basic tools, education, and resources to start a 5’x 20’ vegetable garden plot, for free!

Applications fees to the program are $15 and are nonrefundable. Please note that this is an application fee and does not guarantee acceptance into the program. If for any reason you cannot or do not want to pay the application fee, you may email programs@growoakridge.org for a fee waiver form.

Gardeners may either use their own backyards if suitable, or space in First Presbyterian Church Community Garden, located at 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Gardens must be located in Oak Ridge. This is your garden, designed by you and with your goals in mind. We are here as a tool to help you achieve them!

Please read our Program Specifications and Expectations tabs down below before you apply. You may email programs@growoakridge.org if you have any questions.

Who?

We serve 25 - 30 families with gardens planted in Oak Ridge, either in Oak Ridge backyards, or at First Presbyterian Community Garden. All are welcome to apply, but priority will be given to families who receive SNAP/EBT, families with children under 18, or low income families.

When?

Starting in January 2025! Participants will be required to attend 9 workshops, roughly once a month throughout the growing season. The program and classes will begin on January 15th, 2025 and end October 31st, 2025. See our workshop schedule and topics below.

Program Specifications

We offer two program tracks. Participants in both tracks are required to attend 9 mandatory workshops. Our garden coach will visit each gardener personally at the beginning of the season and will be available to discuss questions over the phone. Participants must attend the required workshops, do assigned readings and garden tasks, meet with the garden coach as required, and submit harvest totals.

We provide an ORGANIC, gardening education in our program. Click the + signs below to explore our two program tracks.
